Following the popular uprisings that started in mid-July and escalated in recent weeks, Bangladesh's prime minister resigned. An interim government was presented on Thursday 8 August.

Switzerland is following the current developments in Bangladesh with great attention and is concerned about the unprecedented loss of life since mid-July 2024. It calls for calm and restraint. Human rights and democratic principles must be upheld – in particular, the safety of all, including religious and indigenous minorities, as well as ensuring accountability for human rights violations.

The FDFA advises against tourist and other non-urgent travel to Bangladesh. The development of the situation is uncertain and a deterioration of the security situation is possible at any time. According to current information, the 139 Swiss nationals registered with the Swiss representation in Dhaka are safe. Swiss nationals travelling in Bangladesh are urged to avoid demonstrations and gatherings of any kind and to exercise the utmost caution.
