Understanding regarding the aerosolized use of central nervous system-acting chemicals for law enforcement purposes

After years of work in the area, Switzerland achieved an important success in strengthening the international norm against chemical weapons at the 26th Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). In The Hague today, the states parties voted by a large majority in favour of a decision initiated by Australia, the US and Switzerland stipulating that the aerosolised use of central nervous system-acting chemicals be forbidden in national law enforcement. This is an important step towards strengthening the ban on chemical weapons, which has come under some pressure.


New public-private partnership to promote innovative development finance

The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, UBS Optimus Foundation, Credit Suisse Foundation and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) launched the Sustainable Development Goals Impact Finance Initiative on 1 December. The initiative aims to mobilize up to one billion Swiss francs in private capital to advance measurable impact in developing countries. SECO supports the initiative with 19.5 million Swiss francs.


Celebration of presidential election postponed

In view of the current health situation, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis has decided, in agreement with the cantonal authorities of Ticino, to postpone the celebrations for the planned election as President of the Confederation. The celebrations should have taken place in Ticino on December 16.


Switzerland and Vietnam to further deepen relations

On Friday, 26 November, President Guy Parmelin and Vietnamese President Nguyễn Xuân Phúc met at Lohn Manor where they commended the close ties that have developed between Switzerland and Vietnam since diplomatic relations were established 50 years ago. Both sides stressed their intention to further deepen relations in the coming years.


Ignazio Cassis visits China to pursue strategic dialogue

On 27 November, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis will meet with fellow foreign minister Wang Yi in Anji in the province of Zhejiang. Their discussions will focus on bilateral relations in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, recent international developments and human rights. The head of the FDFA will also present the Federal Council's China Strategy.


FDFA welcomes nomination of Swiss diplomat Mirjana Spoljaric Egger as next ICRC president

The Assembly of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has appointed Mirjana Spoljaric Egger as its new president. The FDFA welcomes the nomination of the Swiss diplomat, who will succeed Peter Maurer in October 2022. Ms Spoljaric previously served as head of the FDFA's UN division and since 2018 as UN Development Programme (UNDP) Assistant Secretary-General.



Federal Council adopts dispatch on modification of Host State Act

The Federal Council has adopted at its meeting of 24 November 2021 a dispatch on a modification of the Host State Act. The purpose of this bill is to take account of the ICRC's particular circumstances with respect to its occupational pension scheme. The bill is in line with the Swiss host state policy pursued by the Federal Council.


Swiss Rescue again deemed fit for lifesaving deployments

Swiss Rescue has retained its spot among the world's best search and rescue teams. Around 80 members of Swiss Rescue and 8 search and rescue dogs were assessed and reclassified by an international evaluation panel between 22 and 24 November 2021 in the Geneva area.



Switzerland and the UK hold strategic dialogue

On Monday, 22 November 2021, FDFA State Secretary Livia Leu met in London with Sir Tim Barrow, Political Director at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, for the annual strategic dialogue between Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Their discussions focused on the close and multifaceted bilateral relations between their two countries, multilateral cooperation, European policy and current global developments. The strategic dialogue was followed by a meeting between Ms Leu and Cabinet Minister Lord David Frost, underlining the importance of the exchanges between Switzerland and the UK.


Federal Councillor Cassis in Tripoli: humanitarian support and Libyan peace process at the centre of discussions

On 21 November Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis met the Libyan prime minister, Abdelhamid Dabeiba, the head of the Presidential Council, Mohamed Menfi, and the ministry of foreign affairs Najla Mangoush for discussions in Tripoli. The key topics were developments in the Libyan peace process and Switzerland's humanitarian work in Libya. The visit to Tripoli marks the end of a four-day trip that also took Mr Cassis to Slovenia and Saudi Arabia.
