Switzerland and the Netherlands strengthen consular cooperation

Federal Councillor Burkhalter has met the Dutch foreign minister, Frans Timmermans, for bilateral talks during his working visit to The Hague. The head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and his Dutch counterpart discussed the Federal Council's mandate to negotiate institutional issues with the EU. The two foreign ministers also signed an agreement establishing a framework for specific joint measures relating to consular services.

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter will travel to The Hague to meet the Dutch foreign minister, Frans Timmermans. As part of his working visit to the Netherlands, the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) will also visit the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), both of which are based in The Hague.


Europe: Federal Council submits draft institutional terms of reference for consultation

Last June the Federal Council instructed the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) to draw up draft terms of reference for negotiations with the European Union on institutional matters. Today the Federal Council adopted the draft and sent it to the Foreign Affairs Committees and the cantons. The social partners are being informed.


Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter opens the 2013 Ambassadors and Representations abroad Conference

The 2013 Ambassadors and Representations abroad Conference has begun in Bern with an opening address by Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter. The 4-day event is entitled "Switzerland confronts the risks and challenges for foreign and security policy". Around 230 Swiss representatives working abroad will debate current foreign and security policy issues in working groups and plenary discussions, as well as Switzerland's response to the challenges involved.

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter is travelling to Slovakia on Thursday, 15 August 2013, for a working visit, during which he will in particular be meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Minister of Foreign Affairs Miroslav Lajcak. Some of the principal items on the discussion agenda include Switzerland’s relations with the European Union, the Swiss 2014 Chairmanship of the OSCE, the Swiss contribution to EU enlargement, and cooperation in the issuing of visas.


Swiss mission of unarmed military personnel to Mali

On 14 August 2013, the Federal Council decided to second up to eight military personnel to the United Nations Mission in Mali to be deployed as unarmed military observers. The decision strengthens Switzerland’s humanitarian, development and peace policy commitment in Mali.

Ambassador Michel Mordasini, currently Assistant-Director-General of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs has been appointed to the post of Vice-President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). The official announcement was made today in Rome by the President of IFAD, Kanayo F. Nwanze.

From 29 July to 1 August, Mr Burkhalter, the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), will pay an official working visit to Lithuania and then to Latvia. He will make the traditional 1 August speech to mark Switzerland's national day in Riga. The main aims of this official working visit are to deepen bilateral relations, to discuss the importance of relations between Switzerland and the European Union (EU) and to present Switzerland's priorities for its chairmanship of the OSCE in 2014. Mr Burkhalter will also visit a number of projects that are part of the Swiss enlargement contribution. This contribution is a key element in the bilateral relationships between Switzerland and each of these two countries.



Four-country meeting of foreign ministers in Salzburg

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, will travel to Salzburg on 26 July for the annual working meeting of the foreign ministers of Switzerland, Austria, Germany and the Principality of Liechtenstein. Their talks will focus on political, economic and social topics. In the margins of the meeting, Federal Councillor Burkhalter will meet the Austrian President Heinz Fischer.
