Swiss President Didier Burkhalter to take part in the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM)

The President of the Swiss Confederation, Didier Burkhalter, is to take part in the 10th Summit of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) being held on 16 and 17 October in Milan, Italy. ASEM is the most important platform for political dialogue between Asia and Europe. The purpose of this meeting between heads of state and government is to discuss issues of common interest to the two continents.


Switzerland shows Colombian kids the potential of sport

From 16 to 25 October 2014, 20 Colombian girls and boys have been invited by Switzerland to get to know around a dozen sports that are well loved in this country – including ice hockey, tennis and football, as well as Swiss wrestling, climbing and gymnastics. The aim of the visit is to show young people from conflict-ridden regions alternative prospects to a life of crime and violence. The visit is organised by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) in cooperation with the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Office of Sport (FOSPO) and a variety of sports-related organisations.


President of the Swiss Confederation, Didier Burkhalter, presents new action plan to protect child soldiers

Youth was very much to the fore at today's annual conference of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs’ (FDFA) Human Security Division (HSD). Young people from Switzerland and abroad had an opportunity to talk about their experiences as victims and perpetrators in conflicts as well as their visions of and commitment to peace, democracy and human rights. The President of the Swiss Confederation, Didier Burkhalter, presented the new action plan to protect children in armed conflict; he wants Switzerland to play a more active role in this area. Around 600 interested parties attended the conference, which also featured contributions from eminent international experts such as Fatou Bensouda, chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.



President of the Swiss Confederation Didier Burkhalter receives Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev

The President of the Swiss Confederation, Didier Bukhalter, received the President of Bulgaria, Rosen Plevneliev, on Monday 13 October 2014 during the latter’s official visit to Switzerland. Talks focused on relations and cooperation between Switzerland and Bulgaria, notably in the field of vocational education and training. The meeting, also attended by Federal Councillor Simonetta Sommaruga, included discussions on Swiss policy on Europe, Switzerland's contribution to EU enlargement and various topical international issues, especially those related to the OSCE, which Switzerland is chairing in 2014.


Switzerland reaffirms its pledge to the Occupied Palestinian Territory

At the Cairo Conference for Palestine on rebuilding the Gaza Strip the Federal Delegate for Humanitarian Aid, Manuel Bessler, today confirmed Switzerland's pledge to donate an average of 30 million francs per annum to the Occupied Palestinian Territory between 2014 and 2017. He also spoke of Switzerland's role as a facilitator in the Palestinian reunification process.

On the occasion of the World Day against the Death Penalty, Swiss President Didier Burkhalter is launching a Joint Declaration in favour of death penalty abolition, together with 11 foreign ministers from around the world. Switzerland which rejects the death penalty everywhere and under all circumstances, is contributing towards achieving worldwide abolition by 2025.



Switzerland to attend IMF and World Bank 2014 Annual Meetings in Washington

Federal Councillor Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf as Head of the Swiss delegation, Federal Councillor Johann N. Schneider-Ammann and Thomas Jordan, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Swiss National Bank, will attend the joint Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group in Washington from 10 to 11 October 2014. The key topic will be the global economic environment. The main topic for the Development Committee will be the promotion of shared prosperity for the broadest possible sections of the population as well as the World Bank's work on gender equality.
