By reinforcing the structures of civil society, HEKS supports access to land and resources, the creation of sustainable value chains (production, processing, marketing, knowledge transfer) as well as peaceful co-existence. HEKS is thus making a contribution towards equal rights and more prosperity for rural communities.

Contexte

  • Around 70% of the poors in the world live in rural areas.
  • Increasing pressure on natural resources.
  • Fragility due to inadequate state structures, lack of political will and the absence of civil society institutions and regulatory systems.
  • More frequent, more extreme weatherrelated disasters.
  • Complex dynamics cause deprivation, hunger, poverty and violence.
  • Shortterm pressure for success vs. longterm processes.
  • Objectifs

    For its target groups, HEKS makes a contribution to the sustainable (environmental, economic and social) improvement of their living conditions as well as a contribution to a more peaceful and more equitable society.

    Groupes cibles
    Rural communities: Small farmers, farmers' associations and cooperatives, service providers in rural areas, indigenous and traditional population groups, discriminated people/groups, landless people, members of minorities, women and young people.
    Effets à moyen terme

    Equal rights and prosperity for rural communities are the overarching objectives of HEKS. The sustainable development of the population living in rural areas and dependent from agricultural production is promoted, therefore HEKS:

    • supports access to resources and the necessary means of production;
    • stimulates and supports the development of value chains;
    • works towards the integration of marginalized groups and minorities;
    • supports prevention of crises, conflicts, disasters and emergency relief in case of disasters
    • integrates emergency relief and reconstruction into existing development projects.
    • establishes a culture of mutual learning and fosters knowledge sharing in networks

    Résultats

    Principaux résultats antérieurs:  

    • Legal security, constructive conflict resolution behaviour and civil society’s participation in political processes are the starting points for a reliable access to land and its cultivation.
    • Investing in smallholder agriculture, as well as in a functioning value chain, has high potential for reduction of poverty in rural areas.
    • The rights-based approach reinforces the impact and sustainability of projects.
    • The social and economic integration of marginalized and socially disadvantaged people is a requirement for peaceful structures and sustainable development
    • Experiences from projects can be incorporated at the political level by building alliances or advocacy and thereby the impact be increased
    • In conflict-ridden contexts, space for reflection and discussion is a powerful driving force towards positive change.
    • Positive economic short term results motivates working on longer term perspectives
