Program Contribution to Kooperationsgemeinschaft (KoGe), 2023-2024
KoGe is an umbrella organization whose mandate is aligned with the SDG 16+ framework (peaceful, just and inclusive societies). With its faith-based member organizations of protestant background that are deeply anchored in the Swiss society, KoGe empowers disadvantaged people and provides access to food security, education and health. It also strengthens communities in peacebuilding and conflict transformation.

- More than 80’000 people reached through prevention activities on SGBV, support for victims of violence and peacebuilding processes. Increased and strengthened initiatives in the field of interreligious dialogue demonstrate KoGe’s contribution to peaceful coexistence.
- Over 500’000 people (focus on marginalized) had access to basic services, e.g. primary health care, basic education, vocational training, livelihood programmes.
- The positive effects of KoGe’s life skills education programmes were confirmed: 86% of surveyed participants perceived an improvement in their quality of life, alcohol- and drug consumption, violence and GBV were reduced.
- Social and political empowerment of marginalised groups was partially successful but challenged by the pandemic. Political participation and social involvement of vulnerable youth increased, but previous successes in the field of rights for people with disabilities vanished.
- KoGe participated in the SDC Learning Journey on Strengthening CSOs and national ownership. Several KoGe MOs supported the establishment and strengthening of CSO networks and were successful in passing laws or regulations. Cooperation with local and regional government authorities was either focused on filling the gaps where local or regional services are inexistent, or on the integration of services into the national health and educational systems in line with existing plans.
- A good practice concerns the negotiation of government co-financing by partner organizations when providing services in the absence of the state.
- Most KoGe members have increased their knowledge on conflict-sensitive programme management (CSPM) and have engaged in capacity building for their partners. KoGe started to connect with international policy dialogue on SDG 16+ and established a contact with the Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies.

Contesto | The access to basic public services is hin-dered for marginalized and vulnerable people in many countries where KoGe works. Climate change and the Covid-19 crisis further jeopardize people’s lives and livelihoods. Competition over scarce liveli-hood resources often results in deliberate exclusion, fueling conflicts or community displacement as in My-anmar, South Sudan or the DRC. Shortfalls in devel-opment among various groups (women, youth, and refugees) often persist because of discrimination. Women are particularly discriminated with respect to opportunities. High levels of violence affecting espe-cially adolescent girls, children, female heads of households, persons with disabilities and LGBTI per-sons are prevalent. UNODC reported that 87’000 women were intentionally killed in 2017 (more than half by a partner or family member). Violence be-came the biggest obstacle to reaching the SDGs and many of the poorest communities will not reach the SDG goals if it prevails. More than 80% of the world’s extreme poor are expected to live in countries af-fected by violence and conflict by 2030. |
