Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, the head of the FDFA, today received the Hungarian foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, in Bern for an official working visit. The talks centred on bilateral relations, European policy and current geopolitical issues.

During the talks, Mr Cassis emphasised the historically close relations enjoyed by Switzerland and Hungary. Mr Cassis welcomed the growing trade relations between the two countries, highlighting the resulting opportunities and challenges.

The two foreign ministers also discussed their countries' relations with the EU and in particular the new bilateral negotiating package between Switzerland and the EU, which forms a solid basis for further steps to stabilise and develop the bilateral approach. Hungary will receive CHF 87.6 million from the second Swiss contribution to selected EU member states. This funding will be used to implement projects and programmes in the areas of business, health, energy efficiency and social inclusion, in conjunction with the Hungarian authorities. This support from Switzerland will contribute to security, stability and prosperity in Europe.

The current geopolitical context was also discussed, namely transatlantic relations, the situation in the Western Balkans and the situation in Ukraine. With regard to Ukraine, Mr Cassis underscored Switzerland's continued support for reconstruction and humanitarian aid.

Mr Cassis informed his Hungarian counterpart about the upcoming Swiss chairpersonship of the OSCE and highlighted the importance of dialogue and cooperation in view of the current security policy situation on the European continent. In this context, Switzerland is committed to maintaining and strengthening the OSCE as an inclusive platform for dialogue.
