Mr Cassis received Mr Türk for a working meeting, in which he assured him of Switzerland's continued support and highlighted the importance of the OHCHR as Switzerland's main multilateral partner in the field of human rights. Mr Cassis and Mr Türk shared their concerns about the increasing pressure on democracies, brought about by a rise in authoritarian tendencies worldwide. Both stressed how important it is in these circumstances to recall the significance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, whose 75th anniversary is being celebrated this year. The visit concluded with lunch, which was also attended by National Councillor Damien Cottier in his capacity as president of the parliamentary delegation to the Council of Europe.
Mr Türk also paid a courtesy call on President Berset. In the context of current crises and conflicts worldwide, Mr Berset welcomed the work of the OHCHR on the ground. Mr Berset and Mr Türk agreed that strengthening human rights is central to economic and social development and to conflict prevention. They also discussed deepening cooperation on human rights in the context of Switzerland's role as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Switzerland supports OHCHR with CHF 10 million
As host state, Switzerland supports the OHCHR and the UN Human Rights Council both politically and financially. Mr Türk, who took office as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in October 2022, expressed his gratitude for Switzerland's support as one of the OHCHR's biggest donor countries. Switzerland provided CHF 10 million of funding in 2022 – 26% up on the previous year. Mr Türk presented the OHCHR's priorities for 2023.
