Redoutables vestiges de la guerre qui a fait rage en Croatie de 1991 à 1996, les mines et autres restes explosifs de guerre représentent toujours un danger pour la population locale. L’intégration économique et sociale des victimes représente elle aussi un défi pour la société. La Suisse contribue à hauteur de 3 millions de francs à des mesures visant à la fois à éliminer les mines et à soutenir les victimes et leurs familles. La qualité de vie des habitants des régions contaminées s’en trouve ainsi améliorée.

Si la Croatie se situe au-dessus de la moyenne des États membres de l’UE en matière d’investissements dans les nouvelles technologies, le pays, qui figure parmi les derniers ayant rejoint l'UE, est à la traîne pour ce qui est du développement de nouveaux produits. L’innovation est un facteur important pour le développement de l’économie et joue un rôle significatif, en particulier s'agissant d’un pays affichant un taux de chômage élevé. C'est la raison pour laquelle la Suisse apporte une contribution à hauteur d'un million de francs à la Croatie dans le cadre du programme Eurostars. Celui-ci vise à renforcer la collaboration internationale en matière de recherche et développement entre des petites et moyennes entreprises (PME), croates dans le cas présent, et des partenaires européens.
