Temporary Position – Project Assistant Embassy of Switzerland

The Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, D.C. is currently offering a full-time (40 hours per week) position as Project Assistant for the annual Soirée Suisse in the field of Communications and Public Diplomacy for 3 months: July 1, 2024 – September 30, 2024. The remuneration for this position is USD 3,500 per month (gross salary). This position is ideal for a recent university graduate.

The Soirée Suisse is the largest annual event the Embassy of Switzerland organizes to celebrate the Swiss-American partnership. The 23rd Soirée Suisse will take place on Wednesday, September 18, 2024. The Project Assistant will be part of the Communications and Public Diplomacy Section and will work under the supervision of its Deputy Head, who is leading the Soirée Suisse project.

Advisor on Budgetary and Management Questions (100%)

The Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations in New York is looking for a qualified candidate for the position of Advisor on Budgetary and Management Questions in the Legal, Sanctions, Counter-Terrorism, Human Rights, Budget and Management Affairs Team.
The Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the UN in New York promotes Switzerland’s interests at the UN Headquarters, in line with the country’s foreign policy goals. Under the political direction of the Swiss government, the Mission participates in the work of the UN’s principal organs (General Assembly, Security Council and Economic and Social Council). Switzerland is a member of the UN Security Council in 2023 and 2024.

Job Description
The Advisor on Budgetary and Management Questions covers a broad range of budgetary and management issues across the UN system, especially in the UN General Assembly and its Fifth Committee. The role offers the opportunity to gain in-depth and hands-on experience in multilateral diplomacy and negotiations and presents a unique chance to acquire comprehensive knowledge of the working methods and functioning of the entire UN System.

Responsibilities

  • Represent Swiss interests at the UN as well as vis-à-vis the Permanent Missions of other UN member states;
  • Develop and defend Swiss positions;
  • Negotiate and chair resolutions in the UN Fifth Committee;
  • Draft Swiss statements, talking points, letters, briefing notes, reports, and communication material, including for social media;
  • Collect information, conduct substantial research and provide policy analysis;
  • Advise on budgetary, management and oversight issues while identifying opportunities and initiatives;
  • Organize, coordinate, accompany, and support delegation visits to New York and high-level public events.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in international relations, political science, law or finance and administration;
  • Relevant work experience with intergovernmental organizations or in the private sector; work experience in the Swiss Federal Administration, a permanent mission or representation of Switzerland would be an asset.
  • Fluency in English and good knowledge of French as one of the working languages of the UN and national languages of Switzerland.
  • A solid knowledge of international politics and Swiss foreign policy, with a strong interest in governance questions.
  • Fast learner and flexibility to take on new questions, capability to engage in detailed research;
  •  Strong negotiation and presentation skills, stress resistance and ability to work under pressure;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to develop a professional network.
