Press releases, 16.05.2025

On 16 May, in the Albanian capital Tirana, President Karin Keller-Sutter attended the sixth summit of the European Political Community (EPC). With Denmark set to hold the EU Council Presidency in the second half of the year, she met with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The summit focused on Europe’s competitiveness, democratic resilience and security.

President Keller-Sutter took part in the thematic session titled Boosting European Competitiveness and Security through Innovation and Resilience. She reaffirmed Switzerland’s commitment to ensuring the competitiveness of the European continent. Issues such as transatlantic trade relations and the war in Ukraine also played a central role in discussions on the sidelines of the summit.

The sixth EPG summit was attended by representatives from around 45 countries, the institutions of the European Union, and other European organisations. President Karin Keller-Sutter held talks with several heads of state and government, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

During their meeting, President Keller-Sutter and Prime Minister Frederiksen emphasised the excellent and extensive cooperation between Switzerland and Denmark. They also praised the countries’ close economic ties, scientific collaborations and research partnerships, as well as their cooperation on carbon capture and storage (CCS).

European policy was also an important topic. Ms Keller-Sutter outlined the next steps in stabilising and developing Switzerland’s bilateral relationship with the EU. Given the numerous geopolitical challenges, the delegations also emphasised the importance of stable relations between Switzerland and the EU.

Among the international issues discussed, particular focus was given to the war against Ukraine and transatlantic relations. Both parties reaffirmed the importance of a rules-based international order as the foundation for secure and prosperous development. The priorities for Switzerland’s upcoming chairmanship of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in 2026 were also discussed.

The EPC is an informal platform to strengthen political dialogue and cooperation on key shared issues across the European continent, with the aim of promoting security, stability and prosperity. The next EPC summit will take place this October in Denmark.
