Mr Wang's invitation to Mr Cassis to attend the launch of the International Organization for Mediation in Hong Kong was based on Switzerland's reputation and expertise in good offices and mediation.
In his speech, Mr Cassis reiterated the that good offices are an essential part of Swiss foreign policy. Switzerland has a long-standing tradition of neutrality, and is recognised internationally as a reliable, discreet and pragmatic actor in conflict resolution. The growing number of conflicts around the world highlights the importance of mediation as a diplomatic instrument. Mediation must be adapted to the specific cultural and political contexts of conflicts, which makes international partnerships essential. In particular, Mr Cassis highlighted that the choice of Geneva to host the trade talks between the high-level US and Chinese delegations on 9 and 10 May illustrated the confidence placed in Switzerland and International Geneva as a framework conducive to high-level mediation activities.
The International Organization for Mediation is an independent intergovernmental organisation dedicated to resolving international disputes through mediation. The launch of the organisation was attended by around 50 states and ten international organisations, including the UN. Switzerland is not a signatory to the convention on the establishment of the new organisation.
Talks with Wang Yi and the chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region
Mr Cassis met with Mr Wang on the fringes of the event in order to continue the discussions held between them in Beijing on 24 April earlier this year. Discussions also focused on global economic challenges and geopolitical developments, notably in Ukraine and the Middle East. The two ministers reaffirmed their support for multilateralism and respect for international law, which are essential in the face of current challenges.
During his visit to Hong Kong, Mr Cassis also held talks with the chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, John Lee. The importance of economic, financial, diplomatic and scientific exchanges between Switzerland and the port metropolis was discussed. Hong Kong is Switzerland's third largest trading partner in Asia.
