Switzerland to host a global summit on artificial intelligence in 2027

Press releases, 25.06.2025

On 25 June 2025, the Federal Council expressed its intention to host an artificial intelligence (AI) summit in Geneva in 2027.

The Federal Council would host a global AI summit in Switzerland in 2027, the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) and the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) have been tasked to initiate the necessary preparations. This includes collaborating with India, which is organising the next such summit in early 2026. Since the end of 2023, a number of different countries have hosted high-level AI summits to discuss the opportunities and risks AI presents to society and in specific areas such as medicine, climate and agriculture.

Hosting an AI summit allows Switzerland to play a role in shaping the current debate on AI use and international governance, while reinforcing its position as a strong and dynamic research and innovation hub. The summit would also allow to highlight the importance of international law and fundamental rights in AI development and deployment.

Switzerland's global AI summit should be held in Geneva and organised jointly by DETEC and the FDFA, which plan to collaborate with partners from the scientific and business communities.

There have been three global AI summits to date: the first at Bletchley Park in the UK in 2023, followed by Seoul in 2024 and Paris in 2025. Federal Councillor Albert Rösti attended both the Bletchley Park summit and the most recent one in Paris, where he expressed Switzerland's interest in hosting such a summit in the future.

The Federal Council currently assumes that the AI Summit will not generate any additional costs to the Confederation. The necessary resources are expected to be covered by the existing budget and generated through third-party contributions and sponsorship. The Federal Council has tasked DETEC and FDFA to submit a detailed budget by early 2026.
