Switzerland contributes to World Bank's pandemic-focused Financial Intermediary Fund

Press releases, 02.11.2022

The Federal Council has decided to provide financial support to the World Bank's Financial Intermediary Fund for Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response.

The Financial Intermediary Fund (FIF) for Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response (PPR) was officially established at the World Bank in early September 2022. With the WHO chairing its technical advisory panel, the FIF aims to help low- and middle-income countries strengthen PPR and fill existing capacity gaps. To this end, it provides additional funding to improve PPR, encourages countries to invest more in this area, and enhances coordination between partners.

The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated that the PPR capacities of all countries must be improved. Effective and efficient measures to prevent pandemics and their spread are beneficial worldwide and less costly than having to deal with the impacts of pandemics. That is why committing to PPR-related development cooperation inlow- and middle-income countries is crucial.

The Federal Council decided today that Switzerland will contribute CHF 2 million to the FIF (subject to parliamentary approval of the necessary credit).
