Switzerland repatriates Hellenistic artifact to Libya

The Director of the Federal Office of Culture (FOC), Carine Bachmann, handed over a marble sculpture of a young woman’s head at the Libyan Embassy in Bern today. This culturally significant archaeological find had been confiscated during criminal proceedings in the canton of Geneva. The repatriation of the artifact took place in accordance with the Federal Act on the International Transfer of Cultural Property.

On 21 November Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis met the Libyan prime minister, Abdelhamid Dabeiba, the head of the Presidential Council, Mohamed Menfi, and the ministry of foreign affairs Najla Mangoush for discussions in Tripoli. The key topics were developments in the Libyan peace process and Switzerland's humanitarian work in Libya. The visit to Tripoli marks the end of a four-day trip that also took Mr Cassis to Slovenia and Saudi Arabia.

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis will visit Ljubljana, Riyadh and Tripoli from 18 to 21 November 2021. The trip to Slovenia, which currently holds the presidency of the Council of the EU, will provide an opportunity to exchange views on European policy. In Saudi Arabia, the protecting power mandate between Iran and Saudi Arabia will be at the heart of discussions, alongside other issues such as the promotion of dialogue, scientific cooperation, sustainable development, and economic matters including the integration of women in the Saudi labour market. In Libya the focus will be on assessing the current conditions with a view to restoring peace in the country.

On 12 November 2021, the city of Paris hosted the most recent international conference on Libya, attended by members of the Berlin Process Political Working Group as well as representatives from Libya's neighbouring countries and interim government. The conference, which is co-chaired by France, Germany, Italy and the UN, supports the political transition in Libya. In his speech, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis called for free and fair elections. Switzerland contributes to resolving the conflict in Libya through its peace building efforts and role as host state for the negotiations.

On 23 June 2021, the members of the Berlin group convened for the second international Berlin Conference on Libya, hosted by Germany and the United Nations. As a participating member, Switzerland was represented at the conference by Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis. In promoting peace and acting as a host state, Switzerland supports a political solution in Libya.

In line with its support for the UN peace process in Libya, on Wednesday 2 June Switzerland and the UN co-hosted a conference of representatives of the member states engaged in the Berlin process on Libya. Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis called on all parties involved to bring about a political solution to the conflict, which began in 2011.

Bern, 05.02.2021 - Between 1 and 5 February Switzerland hosted the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, culminating in the appointment of a unified executive authority tasked with preparing the national elections set for 24 December 2021. Switzerland hosted the forum as part of its commitment to supporting the UN-backed Libyan peace process and to fulfil the peace and security objectives set out in its Foreign Policy Strategy 2020–23.
