Background |
Most of education institutions in disadvantaged regions are located in old buildings (more than twenty years old). Legislation requires fire systems to be installed only if the education institution is being renovated. But municipalities, especially those in disadvantaged regions, lack resources for renovation. As a result, fire safety systems remain uninstalled. In the meantime, statistics report 121 cases of fire in Latvian educational institutions between 2006 and 2010, 19 of which took place in 2010. Most threatened and unsafe are those institutions where children stay overnight. These educational institutions are selected as the priority target group and this project foresees installation of fire safety systems in 138 boarding schools. |
