Swiss embassy in Baghdad reopens

Switzerland reopened its embassy in Iraq today, 33 years after closing its previous representation due to the 1991 Gulf War. By reopening the embassy, the Federal Council aims to strengthen bilateral relations with the populous country and deepen cooperation in economic, security and migration matters. This move also fulfils an objective of the Federal Council's MENA Strategy 2021–24.

In order to curb the spread of COVID-19, the Iraqi government decided to prolong the nationwide preventive measures until the end of the Holy month of Ramadan.

A total lockdown shall be imposed on the weekends (Friday and Saturday), while a curfew will be in place from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.


Discussions focus on regional security during official visit by Ignazio Cassis to Iraq

As part of his official visit to Iraq, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis met with his counterpart from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein, Prime Minister Mustafa Al Kadhimi and the Speaker of the Council of Representatives of Iraq Mohamed al-Halbousi. Discussions focused on the MENA Strategy 2021–24, in particular Switzerland's commitment to promoting dialogue and regional stability. Iraq is the first stop on Mr Cassis's tour of the region, which will also take in Oman and Lebanon.


Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis to visit Iraq, Oman and Lebanon

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) will visit Iraq, Oman and Lebanon from 3 to 8 April 2021. The main purpose of the trip is to hold talks on the priorities of the MENA Strategy 2021–24, with a particular focus on promoting dialogue, reducing regional tensions, sustainable development and humanitarian activities.

The Authorities in the Kurdistan Regional Government has imposed additional COVID-19 measures as of 24 February 2021. Officials have banned entry into the region from other Iraqi governorates until further notice.
