Switzerland and Iran discuss ways of developing relations

On Tuesday, 3 July, during the official visit by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to Bern, Switzerland and Iran reaffirmed their support for the Road Map agreed in 2016; the two countries expressed their wish to deepen relations in spite of the current circumstances and push ahead with implementing the Road Map. The talks between President Rouhani and a Federal Council delegation led by President Alain Berset focused on stabilising the nuclear deal with Iran following the withdrawal of the USA and bilateral cooperation. An agreement and two declarations of intent were signed following the talks.

A high-level delegation of representatives from Iran's ministries of justice and foreign affairs is in Switzerland today and tomorrow. The focus of the visit is on the implementation of the road map to strengthen ties between the two countries which was signed on 27 February 2016 by President of the Swiss Confederation, Johann N. Schneider-Ammann, and President Hassan Rouhani. Political issues, human rights, regional security and the judiciary were discussed in four negotiating formats, some of which were held in parallel. Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter received a courtesy visit from the head of the Iranian delegation, Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi.

The 25th session of the UN Human Rights Council, which was opened on 3 March 2014 by the President of the Swiss Confederation, Mr Didier Burkhalter, has ended today. The council adopted a resolution put forward by Switzerland regarding the protection of human rights during peaceful protest. It also discussed the human rights situation in Syria, North Korea, Myanmar, the Central African Republic, Sri Lanka, Iran, Mali and the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territory.

This agreement is a victory for diplomacy, proving that the pursuit of a diplomatic path can contribute to improving security across the world, particularly in the Middle East.
