Progetto concluso
The proposed contribution aims at responding to the mounting needs by supporting two health centres in Wadi Fira and Sila provinces and reinforcing quality care for children under five suffering from severe acute malnutrition in the targeted health districts. UNICEF provides access to basic services to all the affected communities – refugee and host - which will contribute to strengthening social cohesion and alleviate frustrations between host and refugee/returnee communities.

- Conduct screening and treatment of children under five with severe acute malnutrition
- Ensure access to basic health services including provision of essential medicine, vaccination services, HIV testing and treatment
- Fill identified gaps in staffing at health centres with additional qualified health staff and provide capacity building for existing health personnel
- Strengthen community engagement through the mobilization of children, adolescents/youth, families and community leaders to prevent misinformation and ensure community participation and ownership of preventive and response measures

| Contesto | Since fighting broke out in Sudan in mid-April 2023, many people have fled violence to seek safety in Chad. As of end of September, there are 460,000 refugees and returnees, 85 per cent of whom are women and children. Many of the children who are arriving are in a very poor nutritional state, are suffering from measles or are wounded. Refugees and returnees have limited access to basic health, WASH, protection, nutrition, and education services. Their arrival has put additional pressure on areas where local communities were already struggling to survive. The risk of waterborne diseases including cholera has increased with the onset of the rainy season. Some of the children coming from Sudan have been unaccompanied or separated from their parents. Many have been exposed to protection risks including sexual exploitation and abuse. There are also reports of gender-based violence (GBV). |
