Support to UNHCR Tanzania
Tanzania hosts 244’000 refugees, mostly from Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the majority living in refugee camps. Dropping out of school is a major concern among children refugees, exposing them to an increased risk of child labour, early marriages and pregnancies. By supporting the cost of their yearly school examination, Switzerland contributes to ensure children refugees’ access to education is maintained, enhancing better long-life perspectives.

Background |
Tanzania is currently home to 244’000 refugees and asylum-seekers, mainly from Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The majority of them (83%) live in two refugee camps (Nduta and Nyarugusu), and depend almost entirely on humanitarian assistance. UNHCR leads and coordinates the refugee response in Tanzania. However, the chronic underfunding threatens the ability of the humanitarian organisations to deliver their services. Out of a comprehensive 2023 budget of USD 115.9 million for UNHCR refugee operations in Tanzania, only 32% is funded. Due to the limited funds available, in 2023 most basic services have been drastically reduced, resulting in a deterioration of refugees’ living conditions. Refugee children are particularly affected and drop out of school has become a major concern caused by several factors, including the cost of the yearly school exam. By covering the expenses of the yearly examination, Switzerland will contribute to prevent the drop out phenomenon and improve children perspectives for a brighter future. |
